Hello, and welcome to another episode of the transformations with Jane podcast.
Speaker:I'm your host Jane Nakata.
Speaker:Coming to you from Fukushima prefecture here in Japan.
Speaker:Well, it is a bit of a last minute episode this week.
Speaker:I'm sorry.
Speaker:It has just been completely wild over here.
Speaker:In pod launch with Jane land and we have lots of new shows coming out.
Speaker:Just this week.
Speaker:So I have been a little bit busy and have kind of left it to the
Speaker:last minute to record this episode.
Speaker:Also, I had wanted to invite these two guests onto the show for a while now.
Speaker:And I asked them the other day and they said, yes, we'd love to come on.
Speaker:And so it was just a matter of finding the time to actually get them
Speaker:on the show and to decide what we were going to talk about, et cetera.
Speaker:So I'll introduce you to my guests in a moment, but first, let me just fill
Speaker:you in a little bit about some of the shows that we have coming out this week.
Speaker:So on the 1st of February is the launch of the focus core Japan podcast.
Speaker:By the team at focus core.
Speaker:And David Sweet, who is also the host of barefoot lunch.
Speaker:We helped David to get his show out there.
Speaker:And it's been great, fun being part of that.
Speaker:If you are interested to know more about recruitment and.
Speaker:Getting a job or retaining talent in your organization, those kinds of topics.
Speaker:It will be a great podcast for you to listen to.
Speaker:Also coming out this week is a new podcast by Debbie, just Sony called itself power.
Speaker:Now.
Speaker:And guest who is the first guest on the show?
Speaker:It's me.
Speaker:I'm very privileged to be guest number one.
Speaker:And I really enjoyed talking with Debbie about some of things that
Speaker:happened in 2011 and how that's given me a unique perspective on life that
Speaker:has really helped going forward.
Speaker:After that.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:If you are looking for new podcasts and you enjoy the show, this show,
Speaker:I'm sure you will also enjoy.
Speaker:The themes and the contents of those other shows coming out.
Speaker:And there's a couple more coming in February as well.
Speaker:Fingers crossed that they all work out.
Speaker:So, let me introduce to you my two guests for today.
Speaker:They are my son Hugo and my daughter.
Speaker:Emilia.
Speaker:They have been asking to be on the show and I thought, well, why not?
Speaker:And let's have a go and see how it goes.
Speaker:Hugo himself actually has his own podcast.
Speaker:Which we work on in the holidays, we put out a little, two or three
Speaker:minute episode talking about whatever he's interested in at the time.
Speaker:And this is Amelia's first.
Speaker:Opportunity to be on a podcast.
Speaker:So, yes, I hope you will enjoy listening to them.
Speaker:And they've definitely enjoyed taking part and being on the show.
Speaker:So here we go.
Speaker:Hi, mummy.
Speaker:It's nice to be on this show today.
Speaker:Are you good.
Speaker:Thank you for coming on the show today.
Speaker:It's lovely to have you on the transformations with Jane podcast.
Speaker:Have you ever listened to an episode of my show?
Speaker:Yes, when.
Speaker:When one time.
Speaker:One time.
Speaker:Just the one time.
Speaker:Oh, I see.
Speaker:But you have your own podcast, don't you?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:I have one.
Speaker:What's your podcast called the Hugo show.
Speaker:That's right.
Speaker:The Hugo show.
Speaker:What kind of things do you talk about on your podcast?
Speaker:But in a Minecraft and lanky box.
Speaker:And those are all things that seven year old boys love.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:And what do you love at the moment?
Speaker:I love plugging one.
Speaker:And do you have a favorite Pokemon?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:What's he called?
Speaker:What are they called?
Speaker:I should say.
Speaker:They are called.
Speaker:Carrie L.
Speaker:And touch you and all those Evie collections.
Speaker:I see.
Speaker:And you have made an online friend haven't you.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:What's his name?
Speaker:He's called Dawn.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:George, I don't know if you're listening, but he goes very excited to play
Speaker:Pokemon cards with you soon online.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:So, what else would you like to talk about today?
Speaker:Who go.
Speaker:Let's talk about.
Speaker:At school.
Speaker:School.
Speaker:what are you looking forward to about the second grade?
Speaker:, I don't have anything I know about.
Speaker:Second grid cell.
Speaker:Um, but you won't be the new kid wearing that silly yellow hat anymore.
Speaker:I have to read the,
Speaker:what do you call it?
Speaker:yeah, the white.
Speaker:I can read.
Speaker:Hat that's right.
Speaker:You have.
Speaker:PE that's right.
Speaker:Do you use that for PE?
Speaker:I don't have to wear the funny yellow hat anymore to school.
Speaker:First grade.
Speaker:And you've been working really hard with your English recently.
Speaker:Haven't shared.
Speaker:What have you been doing?
Speaker:I have been doing.
Speaker:talking about English.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And you've been practicing your reading and writing, using the Scholastic.
Speaker:Hundred words you have to, uh, 100 words you should know before.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:The grade that's right before you start first grade.
Speaker:So we're doing the first book.
Speaker:And it's going well, isn't it.
Speaker:You're enjoying it.
Speaker:And you're getting very good at reading.
Speaker:And writing in English.
Speaker:So I'm very happy about that.
Speaker:And you're getting very good at reading and writing in Japanese day.
Speaker:Slowly.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Which do you prefer at the moment?
Speaker:What do you mean?
Speaker:Do you like writing in English?
Speaker:Beta or writing in Japanese better.
Speaker:both.
Speaker:Oh, you liked both.
Speaker:But Japanese is more better.
Speaker:Then.
Speaker:English because it's not too hard to write it, but the kind is really hard.
Speaker:It is hard.
Speaker:You're quite interested in Kanji though.
Speaker:Aren't you?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:And what would you like to do in the spring holidays that are coming up?
Speaker:Oh, the U S J.
Speaker:We as us, Joe.
Speaker:And also.
Speaker:No.
Speaker:Yes, that's right.
Speaker:That's right.
Speaker:It's an all soccer.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:What would you do if we went to U S J.
Speaker:We're gonna go to the teammates.
Speaker:And Mario and.
Speaker:What do you call it?
Speaker:Minions.
Speaker:Then Harry Potter.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Is there anything else you'd like to do in the spring vacation?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Go to Hawaiians.
Speaker:That's our.
Speaker:hot Springs and water resort.
Speaker:Isn't it with.
Speaker:Lots of water slides.
Speaker:I love the water slide.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Excellent.
Speaker:Well maybe.
Speaker:On my birthday.
Speaker:So maybe that your daddy can take you there.
Speaker:Yes, but.
Speaker:Daddy.
Speaker:When he was on the slide, he clicked, keeps failing off.
Speaker:Did he?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:I didn't hear that story.
Speaker:That's fun.
Speaker:Is there anything else you'd like to say today on the show before you go.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:I will like to talk about.
Speaker:Well, my life is.
Speaker:Tell me about that.
Speaker:I like my life.
Speaker:To be all the.
Speaker:Then Mia.
Speaker:Ah, Mia as your.
Speaker:My sister, your big sister.
Speaker:You want to be older than her?
Speaker:And what do you like about your life?
Speaker:And like my life is I have a Nintendo switch.
Speaker:That's a highlight, is it?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Anything else?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Japanese food.
Speaker:Yeah, you love sushi.
Speaker:okay.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:Uh, before you go.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Do you want to tell everybody to come and listen to your podcast?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:the Hugo show with Hugo in.
Speaker:The podcast, you can find it on all of your favorite podcast players and
Speaker:Hugo usually releases a new episode.
Speaker:Every school holidays don't share.
Speaker:So maybe there'll be one coming through.
Speaker:Dick on Spotify.
Speaker:Well, thanks for coming on the show today.
Speaker:Here you go.
Speaker:It's lovely to have you here.
Speaker:Yes, but I want to talk something more like what.
Speaker:Like.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Tell us about that.
Speaker:As a lady, Sweden, but I didn't know all the words because it's
Speaker:a little bit hard to say it.
Speaker:Oh, you mean Swedish?
Speaker:Oh at the top.
Speaker:Yeah, they have special letters.
Speaker:Don't they?
Speaker:That's right.
Speaker:They have war and ER, and.
Speaker:That we don't have an English.
Speaker:Oh, and stuff like that.
Speaker:But you were very good at.
Speaker:Practicing the Swedish words, they taught you at school.
Speaker:German.
Speaker:This is a bit like German.
Speaker:And what else do you want to tell us about.
Speaker:That's Sweden.
Speaker:Let's talk about.
Speaker:What kind of food?
Speaker:Mm.
Speaker:It's like roast beef and stuff, but again, like the school lunch.
Speaker:It was disgusting.
Speaker:They had terrible school.
Speaker:I shouldn't nice compared to Japanese school lunch.
Speaker:And get the knee school.
Speaker:Lunch is good, but I don't like their soup.
Speaker:It's disgusting.
Speaker:Mm.
Speaker:But it's much nicer than Swedish school lunch.
Speaker:Isn't it.
Speaker:well, I like mommy's food and daddy's food.
Speaker:And you're lucky I'm quite a good chef on Thai.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:But then if the good chef, he is very good chef we're lucky.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Oh, well, thanks for coming on the show today.
Speaker:Here we go.
Speaker:It's been great.
Speaker:And again, sometime in the future.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Thanks.
Speaker:Bye.
Speaker:Hi, Emilia.
Speaker:Thanks for coming on the show today.
Speaker:Hi, mommy.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So we've just had your little brother.
Speaker:Hugo.
Speaker:On the show.
Speaker:And he was telling us all about his podcast and things.
Speaker:He likes about school in Japan and school in Sweden and things.
Speaker:And what would you like to talk about today?
Speaker:Living in Japan.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So tell us about the things you like about living in Japan.
Speaker:Eating the Japanese for.
Speaker:Um,
Speaker:because.
Speaker:When we went to Sweden, most of the food was.
Speaker:meatballs and.
Speaker:Curry.
Speaker:Um, and.
Speaker:They didn't have many Japanese.
Speaker:Food then we like.
Speaker:Yeah, they have a lot of salty kinds of foods.
Speaker:Don't they?
Speaker:Yeah, like the Christmas roast.
Speaker:the ham Christmas ham that was super salty.
Speaker:We definitely struggled with the amount of salt that was in the food and Sweden.
Speaker:But there were some yummy things there.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like the ham and the sausages and the cheese.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:And the cinnamon rolls.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:So custard rolls.
Speaker:Oh, yes.
Speaker:The CRA the cream buns.
Speaker:They have similar bums at this time of the year.
Speaker:So, I didn't know that cinnamon rolls were.
Speaker:A very Swedish food until we got there.
Speaker:And every shop you go to has cinnamon rolls and they're just everywhere.
Speaker:Aren't they.
Speaker:And they even have cinnamon roll day with a, like, just about free they're like five
Speaker:kroners was had 50, 50 yen or something for a whole set for one cinnamon roll.
Speaker:That's so cheap.
Speaker:And that very big and very sweet and cinnamony.
Speaker:Very nice.
Speaker:A real.
Speaker:Punched and they're their cinnamon rolls.
Speaker:And carrot cake.
Speaker:So, do you miss Swedish food or?
Speaker:Nah.
Speaker:No, you don't miss it.
Speaker:That's the thing.
Speaker:We can make carrot cake at our house come, we, and we can
Speaker:make meatballs if we want to.
Speaker:But it's a bit tricky to make a lot of Japanese food when you're not in Japan.
Speaker:So you've taken up the violin recently.
Speaker:How's that going?
Speaker:Good.
Speaker:I have been watching lots of violin videos and.
Speaker:Aye.
Speaker:Really want to play the violin light that.
Speaker:So I'm practicing.
Speaker:Nearly every day for about 10 minutes.
Speaker:No 10 minutes at the moment.
Speaker:But it was quite hard to play the violin when you've just starting,
Speaker:because you haven't got the.
Speaker:The muscles or the finger strength to do it for very long, but you're getting
Speaker:better than when you first started when you couldn't even play one note.
Speaker:And now you can play.
Speaker:Quite a few notes in a row.
Speaker:Five, maybe.
Speaker:So it's coming along, isn't it?
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:And in another year or two, you might be a via a YouTube violinist.
Speaker:That's that's the thing.
Speaker:So if you've never seen any of the YouTube violinists, I encourage you to go.
Speaker:Onto YouTube and have a look and you can find all of your favorite
Speaker:songs played on the violin.
Speaker:By some very talented violinists Sunday and they have some really good ones.
Speaker:It's quite nice to listen to those, your favorite songs without the words,
Speaker:if you're like trying to study or.
Speaker:Maybe your.
Speaker:Yeah, trying to do some work or something.
Speaker:It's quite nice.
Speaker:I've quite enjoyed the violin versions of some songs that you've shown me.
Speaker:I think my favorite,
Speaker:Filing.
Speaker:Cover song is, Good.
Speaker:It's a demon Slayer theme song.
Speaker:I think it was the end.
Speaker:Maybe I th I thought it sounds.
Speaker:Nicer on the Y.
Speaker:Well, and then, um, The actual music video.
Speaker:Yeah, that's the, um, key metanoia.
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Endings theme.
Speaker:Yeah, I think so.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That's pretty cool.
Speaker:One isn't it?
Speaker:Your teacher play that for us.
Speaker:Was that.
Speaker:She paid for us on the first day we went to your class and you
Speaker:were really impressed when you.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So your teacher's a very good violinist, obviously.
Speaker:Um, tell you one day you might be like her.
Speaker:If you keep practicing, keep practicing.
Speaker:So I was asking Hugo.
Speaker:What would you like to do in the spring holidays that are coming up?
Speaker:It's only a few more weeks until the end of school year.
Speaker:And then we have about two weeks of spring holidays.
Speaker:What would you like to do?
Speaker:Um, I would like to see some friends that we haven't seen
Speaker:in a long time, which is how.
Speaker:Like, how does gen-ed.
Speaker:Um, Awesome friends here.
Speaker:Any worky?
Speaker:I haven't seen for a long time.
Speaker:The here go Sadie.
Speaker:You'd like to go to USG, but you didn't say that.
Speaker:So, yeah, I know, but I don't think we will be able to go any way.
Speaker:Why not.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:In a there's.
Speaker:Corona.
Speaker:And then there's.
Speaker:And then there probably won't be any tickets left.
Speaker:Who knows we haven't even checked yet, but.
Speaker:Well, he's ready to go.
Speaker:He's all.
Speaker:He's he's planning for us to go.
Speaker:He only wants to see the, um, The Ana.
Speaker:Not animal grossing, M demon Slayer.
Speaker:And Maria.
Speaker:Which sounds kind of boring.
Speaker:Um, I want to see the Harry Potter.
Speaker:Yeah, we'll have to ask our friends.
Speaker:Who've already been there for their latest tips on how to enjoy the Harry Potter
Speaker:Wizarding world of Harry Potter at USG.
Speaker:how to maximize your enjoyment there.
Speaker:If we would have gone, I would like to see.
Speaker:Just go there for two days and, um, I enjoy everything very slowly.
Speaker:Um, one by one, not just like, not right.
Speaker:No Harry Potter, just look at there for 10 seconds.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Now let's go to the, um, Mario.
Speaker:Section right, because you don't want to have to hurry.
Speaker:Yeah, to be able to enjoy.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I see.
Speaker:So, yeah.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Well, let's keep that in mind.
Speaker:Anything else you want to do in the spring vacation?
Speaker:That's coming.
Speaker:I would like to watch.
Speaker:Singh.
Speaker:Too.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:Fantastic beasts.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Both coming out.
Speaker:Really?
Speaker:Yeah, But you haven't seen fantastic beasts one year.
Speaker:Well, you better get on and watch that one before you go.
Speaker:Otherwise that won't make any sense.
Speaker:One and two.
Speaker:Yeah, all right.
Speaker:Well, thanks for coming on the show today.
Speaker:Amelia has been lovely to have this little.
Speaker:Growing up, chat with you.
Speaker:And hear about.
Speaker:Your thoughts and what you'd like to do for the spring holidays.
Speaker:And who knows what we'll get up to, but.
Speaker:Be nice to go somewhere.
Speaker:Wouldn't it.
Speaker:If we can.
Speaker:If things are.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:And we can travel somewhere.
Speaker:All right, we'll come back.
Speaker:And talk to us again sometime.
Speaker:Bye.
Speaker:So that was Hugo and Amelia.
Speaker:Giving us a little window into their lives and the things that they're
Speaker:interested in and are important to them.
Speaker:And I really hope we can make their wish come true.
Speaker:We can get to U S J during the spring holidays that are coming up.
Speaker:But I was on the website yesterday, actually looking to see how
Speaker:much is this going to cost me?
Speaker:And for the three of us, just to go into the park, wasn't too bad.
Speaker:It was something like 20,000 yen, but to get us all.
Speaker:Fast passes or, you know, those passes that let you skip the line.
Speaker:Then that quickly came up to something like 70,000 yen.
Speaker:And I thought, surely this can't be right.
Speaker:Surely.
Speaker:Truly I do.
Speaker:I really have to pay an extra 19,000 yen per person.
Speaker:In order not to have to wait in the line for seven attractions.
Speaker:I think it was.
Speaker:So anyway, if I got it wrong and you're listening and you're like,
Speaker:no, no, that's not how it works.
Speaker:Please let me know.
Speaker:Um, because I was sort of having a small heart attack after I'd realized
Speaker:that, but you know, like Amelia said, maybe she just wants to go and spend
Speaker:a day and there wasn't any world and she doesn't mind if there's.
Speaker:You know, if you have to stand in the line for a little bit of something, it's
Speaker:all part of the atmosphere and being there and watching the people in there.
Speaker:Um, magic cloaks and all of that.
Speaker:So coming up next on the show, we have some guests lined up for you.
Speaker:And also we have.
Speaker:So coming up next on the show, we have something different happening.
Speaker:I'm actually going to be recording.
Speaker:A group kind of episode with two or more guests.
Speaker:And we're going to be talking about some of the questions that people have
Speaker:around kids and going to school in Japan.
Speaker:And you know, when your kids are starting a new school,
Speaker:Or maybe they're moving from kindergarten to elementary school or onto junior high
Speaker:school or high school and university.
Speaker:It's always a lot to learn as you transition into these new.
Speaker:areas of the kids' lives.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:As a non-Japanese person, it's hard to know what to expect.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:Unless you have these SIM pie MUMAS as we call the years sort of
Speaker:More experienced parent friends.
Speaker:It can be hard to know.
Speaker:How to prepare or what your kid needs or what they don't need, what they can
Speaker:figure out themselves, what you need to do for them, this kind of thing.
Speaker:So we have a variety of wonderful woman from the transmissions with
Speaker:Jane community here in Japan who are going to come on the show, they're
Speaker:going to answer your questions.
Speaker:And they're going to talk about their experiences, which
Speaker:the old different, right.
Speaker:So you might be living somewhere where the situation is different.
Speaker:But we can always learn from others and we can always see where
Speaker:there might be similarities and.
Speaker:Yeah, just really feel a little bit less alone about the whole situation.
Speaker:And maybe even learn some of the things to avoid or things that you really must do.
Speaker:So that episode is coming up soon.
Speaker:We'll be recording that this week and it'll be out.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:In two weeks time.
Speaker:So really looking forward to that, I have a feeling it's going to be
Speaker:quite long and we might break it up.
Speaker:Two or three episodes.
Speaker:Also another topic that's come up recently is the topic of bilingualism.
Speaker:So I'll probably ask them all to talk about how that's going with
Speaker:their own families, because they're all families where one is a.
Speaker:non-Japanese person and they're married to a Japanese person and the living in Japan.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:Generally a similar kind of situation to myself.
Speaker:And I know many of the other listeners of this podcast, and I know everyone who
Speaker:has smaller kids wants to know from the.
Speaker:Parents with older kids, what's it like, what do I need to do?
Speaker:Is this the best for my kid or.
Speaker:Perhaps we need to try a few different things.
Speaker:So I'm sure you'll get loads of ideas . And also just maybe some
Speaker:confidence that whatever happens.
Speaker:It's probably going to be okay in the end.
Speaker:So that's all for this week.
Speaker:Thank you so much for listening.
Speaker:I hope you enjoyed.
Speaker:I'm meeting my two kids through the podcast.
Speaker:They definitely enjoyed being on here.
Speaker:And we'll see you again soon.
Speaker:That's all for now.
